Replacement Press seeks book-length submissions of fiction (novels and short-story collections) that:
1. Represent a fresh, new, or emerging voice. We want to discover the voices of the “next generation,” but we’re not much into demographics so we’re not going to set any kind of age limit. Age is relative in the world of literature, anyway. Minnesota’s own Robert Bly often said that no one should start writing until he or she was 35; Granta, judging by their “best young novelist” list, appears to define “young” as “anyone under 40.” Whatever. Ultimately, it’s all about the writing: is the voice fresh, do you have a perspective we’ve never seen before? Capture us from the very first sentence.
2. Are culturally and socially engaged. We’re not looking for something super-topical or instructive—so take that 500-page treatise on immigration reform elsewhere. What we’re looking for are stories that place their characters in a dynamic social setting. Make connections between the personal and the communal, find that place where individual lives collide with the wider world around them, and then live in that space.
Submission Guidelines: If you have a manuscript that you think fits the above, please query us at submissions@replacementpress.com. Tell us why you think you’re an important voice of the next generation, briefly describe your manuscript, and then attach the first chapter or first story as a Word document or pdf. We’ll try to get back to you within 1-2 months.
